Frequently Asked Questions

Common queries regarding UPSC IFS age limits, cutoff date, and attempts.

The age limit for General category candidates is 21 to 32 years. OBC candidates can apply up to 35 years, and SC/ST candidates up to 37 years. PwD candidates can apply up to 42 years.
General category candidates get 6 attempts. OBC candidates get 9 attempts. SC/ST candidates have unlimited attempts up to their upper age limit. Apparent attempts are counted based on appearance in the CS (Prelims) exam.
The Preliminary exam is common for both IAS and IFS. However, the Main exam is completely separate, featuring written papers in English, General Knowledge, and two optional subjects selected from list of science/engineering subjects.
No. Unlike IAS where any graduate can apply, IFS requires a Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Forestry, Engineering, or a science degree with specific subjects (like Chemistry, Physics, Maths, Zoology, etc.).
Yes. Candidates must meet physical standards for height (min 163 cm for males, 150 cm for females), chest expansion, and pass a physical test (walking 25 km for males, 14 km for females in 4 hours).
IFS cutoffs in the common CS Prelims exam are typically higher than the IAS cutoffs, because the number of vacancies in IFS is much lower (usually around 100-150 seats).
